Brunel/TWI Industrial PhD Scholarships
Brunel University – School of Engineering and Design
Brunel University and TWI are delighted to be able to offer a number of PhD scholarships to support outstanding home and EU students. The scholarships will cover tuition fees and provide a stipend of £16,000 per annum, as well as a comprehensive package of research training and support over the three year research programme.
Scholarships are available with immediate effect for a range of industrial projects in the broad area of non-destructive testing, involving ultrasonic testing and other inspection methods. Projects are related to applications to the oil and gas industries, e.g. for the inspection of pipes and pipelines in order to detect corrosion, and for testing and monitoring large structures such as storage tanks, wind turbine towers, aircraft and vessels. Research will be conducted into a number of relevant topics such as transducer arrays, ultrasonic beam steering, signal processing and imaging correction.
Applicants will require a good honours degree in Mechanical or Electronics Engineering, in Physics or Computer Science. Knowledge of NDT, ultrasonics, wave propagation and sensors would be an advantage but is not essential. Experience with modelling packages and FEA analysis is also recommended.
All successful candidates will be registered for a PhD degree at Brunel University but the projects are to be based at the TWI headquarters in Granta Park, Cambridge. The supervisory team will include an academic supervisor from Brunel University and an industrial supervisor from TWI.
All candidates should have a good command of English.
In the first instance, interested applicants should send a full CV with a cover letter to: Professor Luiz Wrobel, School of Engineering and Design, Brunel University, Uxbridge UB8 3PH. E-mail submissions are preferred, and should be sent to: luiz.wrobel@brunel.ac.uk
The deadline for applications is 15 December 2009. Interviews will be conducted before Christmas or in the first week of January 2010.
