VALOR
European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)
FUNCTION:
Consultant (Scientist) to work on the NERC-funded project “VALOR”
REFERENCE NO:
AP09-16
LOCATION:
ECMWF Headquarters at Shinfield Park, near Reading, Berkshire, United Kingdom
ENVIRONMENT:
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 31 States*. Its prime objectives are the operational production of analyses, medium-range forecasts of weather and ocean waves and seasonal forecasts, as well as scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts. ECMWF operates a large computing facility including supercomputers, data archiving systems and networks. For details see:
MAIN DUTIES:
ECMWF contributes to the VALOR project in the areas of ocean data assimilation using RAPID array data, and assessment of variability/predictability in the North Atlantic region associated with variations in sea-ice concentration. The work of the consultant will cover the following tasks:
- Develop diagnostic tools for the comparison of sea-ice and ocean analysis products against observations, and for the diagnosis of coupled-model simulations of ocean/sea-ice state and variability
- Implement a version of the LIM sea-ice model (either LIM2 or LIM3) into the IFS/NEMO coupled model used at ECMWF, in collaboration with the EC-EARTH consortium and other relevant scientific partners
- Implement a basic strategy for the initialization of sea-ice properties in the ECMWF coupled system, compatible with sea-ice modelling and initialization strategies used by collaborating institutions and partners in externally-funded projects
QUALIFICATIONS:
A university degree to PhD level or equivalent and, if possible, some post-graduate experience with coupled ocean-atmosphere and ice models on seasonal or longer timescales.
Working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German; fluency in English is essential.
REMUNERATION:
Typically within the range of £3,674.00 to £5,090.00 per month net of tax, depending upon qualifications, experience, personal situation and eligibility for expatriation allowance. A deduction of either £33.62 per beneficiary or 4.38% of the monthly remuneration will be made for the supplementary health insurance scheme.
STARTING DATE:
Between 1 March and 1 June 2010 (subject to final negotiations).
LENGTH OF CONTRACT:
1 year, with the possibility of extension of up to one further year
