Three years, Stipend and Fees
The Institute of Energy and Sustainable Development (IESD) is an internationally leading research institute focussed on the energy in the built environment. The scope of its research ranges from the clean and efficient use of energy, to integrated renewable energy technologies and the environmental quality of the built environment. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), 65% of the Institute’s research was rated “world leading” or “internationally excellent”.
Applications are invited from well-qualified, highly motivated individuals for a PhD studentship. The successful applicant will join an exciting consortium project entitled ‘Through Life Energy and Resource Modelling’, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council through the Technology Strategy Board. With the participation of leading companies and research centres, including Airbus, Toyota, IES, Cranfield University and the IESD, the three year research project aims to develop a state of the art model of modern efficient manufacturing processes and buildings. The successful applicant will focus on dynamic models of buildings that address, in detail , the scope for re-use of industrial waste energy to improve overall energy efficiency. You will join a large group of higher degree students and work alongside other research staff in the IESD’s self-contained research base in the renowned Queens Building. You will have your own work space, excellent facilities and funding for travel, to present work at conferences. You will be offered bespoke training necessary for your project.
You must have a good first degree, probably in a physical science or engineering subject, and a genuine interest in buildings. You must be able to work in a self-directed manner but have the interpersonal skills to work effectively with the larger research team and project partners.
The post offers a stipend (currently £13,290) and fees at the UK (Home) rate. It is available for a period of three years.

I am Tilahun Gemechu Gelashe from Ethiopia, a big nation state in Africa in terms of population, size and resources, which could give birth to a developed society. Being this is the fact, there exists a lot of misfortune to continue higher education.
To my academic level, I do have BA degree in Political Science and International Relations (Major) and In Public Administration (Minor) from internationally recognized University of Addis Ababa, and Diploma in Accounting from same. To my work experience, I have worked as an accountant, marketing expert and Dep’t head, and now working as Investment Promotion Team Leader. I am married and have four children.
Ironically, it is sever problem for a person as me to learn for master’s programme, though do have deep interest and need to continue higher education. To be honest, my vision is to earn MA degree in International Business, Business management, Marketing, Management, Environmental and Development Economics, Leadership and Strategy etc which adds values to my knowledge, experience and skill, and further dream for PhD. In fact, having deep interest and need I am financially weak and unable to continue my higher education.
