The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe) Team has an opening for a person with database expertise to maintain and extend existing Oracle databases with this high-profile scientific service provider.
The applicant should be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who can work as part of a team of scientists and software engineers to provide database solutions. The applicant will work closely with other database staff in an existing database group and report to the Head of Databases and Services. This is an opportunity for the right person to make an impact on how the scientific community uses macromolecular structure information.
Specific tasks will include:
- Maintaining weekly data increments to existing databases via workflows.
- Extending existing databases to include new data.
- Designing and implementing new database solutions for macromolecular structure data.
The PDBe Team maintains a number of Oracle databases to store macromolecular structure data derived from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). These databases support functionality such as deposition and search services provided for structural biologists and the wider scientific community.
The PDBe Team is set up within the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) which is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK. The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and attributes:
- A recognised database-related qualification, preferably Oracle.
- Additional programming skills (Java, C/C++, SQL) preferred.
- At least 3 years academic or industry experienced focused on database solutions.
- Experience in biomedical research
- The ability and will to understand scientific needs and translate these into database solutions.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and English skills.An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
