European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI)

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is responsible for hosting core databases for biomedical research, including UniProt (proteins), Ensembl (genomes), PDBe (protein structures) and ArrayExpress (gene expression). The scientific literature is an essential part of these data collections, providing the functional description and biomedical context for the information.

The EBI is expanding the scope of its Literature Resources to better serve the scientific community. The current literature resources at the EBI include: PubMed, Agricola, NHS National Library of Health records, and patent information, all of which are available through CiteXplore. As a partner in the UK PubMed Central project, we are also making search services for full text articles and enhancing the literature using text mining techniques.

We require an enthusiastic and self-motivated information retrieval engineer to join our growing team. The incumbent will be responsible for improving retrieval and adding text mining features in a production environment, working with text mining researchers and core production engineers. This is a great opportunity for the right person to make an impact on how researchers use the scientific literature in the course of their work.

Specific tasks will include:

  • improving retrieval mechanisms for abstracts and full text articles
  • integrating text mining results to create user services
  • creating advanced search features
  • leveraging citation networks to create new search applications

The position reports to the Team Leader for Literature Services.




The information retrieval engineer will ideally have:

  • a university degree in computer science or related field, a PhD is a plus;
  • 3+ years academic or industry experience focused on information retrieval, machine learning, data mining or similar;
  • strong mathematical and programming skills (Java, C/C++, SQL);
  • the ability to understand user needs and translate research results into applications;
  • experience in biomedical research and/or in scientific publishing;
  • problem-solving and troubleshooting skills;
  • the ability to operate in an international environment;
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be a team player.
    An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
