Marie Curie Early Career Fellowship
Marie Curie Early Career Fellowship
University of Oxford – Department of Materials
A Marie Curie Early Career Fellowship position is available for a period of three years, tenable at Oxford University, on a project entitled “Development of spray process for manufacturing new CNT-modified films” (CONTACT ESR2). Candidates will be registered for PhD training while employed by the University on a Marie Curie Initial Training Network, and will be expected to design and develop a new spray process for manufacturing novel CNT-modified films suitable for various applications, for example, capacitor films. Part of the study will be to investigate the dispersion behaviour or CNTs in various matrices and it is planned to investigate the change in dispersability by carrying out different treatments on CNTs materials in order to change their surface properties. Key to this project will be the close collaboration within the team (especially with regard to CNT fabrication in order to gain a better understanding of the CNT starting materials which will be crucial knowledge in order to predict dispersion behaviour of the CNTs within the matrix) and collaboration with Professor Patrick Grant and Dr Valeria Nicolosi, both based at the Department of Materials at Oxford. Characterisation of the produced materials will involve various techniques, including scanning and transmission electron microscopy, XPS, AFM, TGA, RAMAN. Additional techniques are available if necessary. Candidates must possess a good degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials or Engineering Science, and should have experience of processing and characterising polymer materials.
The EC funding for this position provides a total package based on an amount in the region of €46,226 – €48,726 p.a. (depending on employer deductions which will vary according to the exchange rate). This is the gross allowance including an annual living allowance, a mobility allowance (to cover the expenses associated with working in a different country), a travel allowance and a career exploratory allowance, as well as the employer’s NI and tax contributions. Under the terms of the EC funding, which aims to promote mobility within the research community, to be eligible for the post you must not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 months in the past three years.
Further particulars, including instructions which must be read before applying for this post, are available from the website at or from Mrs K Fewings, Department of Materials, University of Oxford, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PH (email: posts@materials.ox.ac.uk; tel: 01865 273680). Please quote reference DJ10/07. The closing date for applications is 16 April 2010 with interviews currently planned for the week beginning 26 April 2010.
