PhD Positions in Accelerator Diagnostics

University of Liverpool DITANET

University of Liverpool – Marie Curie Initial Training Network DITANET

Several PhD positions are currently available within the Marie Curie Initial Training Network DITANET. The network aims at developing beyond-state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques for accelerator facilities and to train young researchers within a European network between several major research centres, leading Universities, and partners from industry.

DITANET covers a wide range of multi-disciplinary topics such as beam profile measurements of ion and electron beams, development of novel particle detection techniques, high-resolution beam position measurements.

Project Details Beam diagnostics systems are essential constituents of any particle accelerator; they reveal the properties of a beam and how it behaves in a machine. Without an appropriate set of diagnostic elements, it would simply be impossible to operate any accelerator complex let alone optimize its performance. Beam diagnostics is a complex field in which a great variety of physical effects are made use of and which consequently often requires close collaboration between partners.

DITANET is currently aiming to recruit a pool of talented, enthusiastic, self motivated, scientists with a degree in physics or a closely related field at both the Early Stage Researcher (PhD candidate).

Training and ContractEach researcher will benefit from a wide ranging training program that will take advantage of both local and network-wide activities, as well as of schools, conferences, and workshops. Most positions are for starting on August, 1 2009 or soon thereafter. Applicants are normally required to undertake trans-national mobility. Internationally attractive salaries will be offered.

Applications Further information on DITANET and on how to apply can be found at http://www.liv.ac.uk/ditanet. Informal information can be obtained from the network coordinator:
