Detection of steroids and doping agents in hair: The future of drug testing in sport

University of Glamorgan – Division of Chemistry and Forensic Science

Applications are invited for a full-time studentship available in the Division of Chemistry and Forensic Science in the Faculty of Health, Sport and Science. The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years for a PhD (via MPhil route) [subject to satisfactory progress]. The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates plus a stipend (currently £13,290 per annum for 2009/10).

Project Description:

The studentship is for an exciting, multidisciplinary project, involving analytical chemistry, forensic science and toxicology. The aim of the project is to make a significant contribution to the research behind the use of human hair testing as an alternative matrix for drug testing in sport. Currently urine and blood are used to screen athletes for drug use at major international competitions. Chemically analysing hair from athletes for the detection of steroids and other doping compounds offers an interesting and very valuable alternative. The procedure is much less invasive and crucially can provide a long term, retrospective indication of a subject’s drug use history. Hair analysis can be used to distinguish between a one off dose, or a prolonged period of substance abuse. The experimental work for this studentship will be carried out within the Division of Chemistry and Forensic Science at the University of Glamorgan, in our brand new, state of the art laboratory facilities.

The Candidate

You will have a strong interest in forensic analytical chemistry and toxicology. Experience within modern analytical chemistry techniques including GC/MS-MS, UPLC and other separation and extraction techniques would be an advantage. Prospective candidates should have a minimum of 2.1 Honours (or above) in a relevant discipline.

Informal enquiries are welcome and may be directed to Dr. Richard Paul [tel. office: +44 (0) 1443 654382 or e-mail: rpaul@glam.ac.uk].
