PhD Studentship in Sustainabale Engineering
PhD Studentship in Sustainabale Engineering
London South Bank University
Faculty of Engineering, Science & The Built Environmentin conjunction with Hewlett Packard Ltd
The Project
This is a new and exciting PhD research opportunity to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact in data centres.
You will work with the multi-national company Hewlett Packard. HP is a leader in sustainable IT and has an advanced Sustainable IT Ecosystem Lab which aims to transform information technology by pioneering technologies that lead to least energy and materials usage.
The objective of the proposed research is to develop a novel method to quantify the environmental impact of the data centre. Data centres are the hub of the internet and house dense clusters of IT equipment with very high embodied energy and requiring inordinately large operational power and cooling systems. They are responsible for 3.3% of UK energy and this is expected to grow to 10% by 2050. The proposed project will investigate the key embodied and consumed resources of the data centre, which will increase energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, promote sustainable development and tackle climate change.
The Candidate
The studentship is for UK and EU candidates meeting the Research Council criterion of having been resident in the UK for the previous 3 years. You should have a first or upper second class honours degree in an appropriate area such as engineering, science or mathematics and environmental technology as well as evidence of interest in energy use, sustainability, carbon emissions and life cycle assessment. You will have the ability to work both independently and flexibly within an industrial and academic team and deliver against a structured, timetabled programme.
You will receive extensive training from LSBU and HP and have the opportunity to travel.
The Award Detail
The 3.5 year studentship provides a tax-free maintenance allowance of up to £15,000 per annum plus tuition fees. It is funded within an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council contract and leads to a PhD in Sustainable Energy. You will be joining an active team in this area under the supervision of Professor Graeme Maidment, Dr Alan Dunn and Dr Deborah Andrews at LSBU and Dr Robert Tozer at HP.
London South Bank University is a dynamic institution at the heart of London, only minutes away from the professional, social and cultural facilities of the capital.
