PhD Studentship University of Bradford – School of Life Sciences and School of Computing, Informatics and Media

University of Bradford

Investigation into complex regulatory networks that control skin development, regeneration and carcinogenesis

Funded by the EPSRC

The main aim of the studentship is to characterise the regulatory networks that control of skin development, regeneration and carcinogenesis. Skin development is a complex process that leads to the formation of an organ that covers and protects the body from external insults. Knowledge of the mechanisms controlling skin development and regeneration is important for understanding pathobiology of skin disorders including skin carcinogenesis. The project will be focused on generating and analysis of the signalling/transcription networks and their computer modelling in normal and neoplastic skin. Project will include close collaboration between a newly founded Centre of Skin Sciences and the School of Computing, Informatics and Media at the University of Bradford.

Applicants, who should be UK or EU nationals (due to funding restrictions), should have, or be about to obtain, a first or 2(i) honours degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Genetics or related discipline, who have essential knowledge of computing and/or mathematics. Applicants with a postgraduate/master degree in Bioinformatics/Systems Biology or other related discipline would be particularly welcome.

The successful students will be registered for a PhD (MPhil in the first instance) at the University of Bradford and will be paid a stipend at the current Research Council rate (£13,290 per year) plus fees.

This Studentship is available from January 2010 for a period of three years.

Informal inquiries may be sent to Prof. Vladimir Botchkarev (Centre of Skin Sciences, v.a.botchkarev@bradford.ac.uk) and to Dr. Yonghong Peng (School of Computing, Informatics and Media, y.h.peng@Bradford.ac.uk).

This studentship offers the applicant the chance to work in an active and internationally recognised academic research department as well as enjoying the cultural richness and diversity of Bradford and the Yorkshire Dales.
