Postdoctoral Research Assistant at University of Dundee

Postdoctoral Research Assistant

University of Dundee – Cell Biology & Immunology

Grade 7 (£28,893 – £35,646)

Applications are invited for a research assistantship to join DR JOHN LUCOCQ’s research group to study mitosome ultrastructure and cell biology with relevance to deeper understanding of these mitochondrial relict organelles. The position is for 5 years funded by the Wellcome Trust, and candidates wishing to start at any time up to May 2010 will be considered.

Until recently it was thought that microaerophilic parasitic protozoa iincluding the microsporidians Encephalitozoon cuniculi and Trachipleistophora hominis never had mitochondria. However in collaboration with the laboratory of Martin Embley and Robert Hirt in Newcastle we have shown these parasites contain tiny double membraned structures of mitochondrial origin. Almost nothing is known about the detailed structure, life history and biology of these organelles. This project will use cryo-TEM, electron tomography, quantitative EM techniques and immuno- electron microscopy to characterize these enigmatic structures and localize key functions at high resolution (See pubmed references 12192407, 14614504, 18449191, 18311129, 18617028).

The College of Life Sciences is a major centre of excellence for cell biology and parasitology. Our microscopy facilities and research funding are of the highest quality and the institute has a strong collaborative ethos (this project is a multicentre collaborative effort with laboratories in Newcastle (Professor Martin Embley http://research.ncl.ac.uk/microbial_eukaryotes/) and Cambridge (Dr. Edmund Kunji http://www.mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk/people/kunji) funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Applicants should preferably have, or be about to obtain, a Ph.D.  A good background in basic or more advanced electron microscopy and cell biological methods would be advantageous.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applications in the form of a CV and covering letter, including the names and addresses of 3 referees and a list of publications, should be sent to HR-LifeSciences@dundee.ac.uk quoting LS/3110/WW.  Alternatively, please send 2 hard copies of your CV and covering letter to Human Resources, College of Life Sciences, MSI/WTB/JBC Complex, University of Dundee, DD1 5EH.

Candidates will only be contacted if invited for interview.

Closing date:  28 February 2010

The University of Dundee is committed to equal opportunities and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.

The University of Dundee is a registered Scottish charity, No: SCO15096.
