Classification Digital Rocks by Machine Learning

Heriot-Watt University – Institute of Petroleum Engineering

Salary: £23,449 – £27,182 per annum depending on experience

Applications are invited for a research associate position on classification digital rocks using machine learning funded UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC).

The goal of this project is to explore the feasibility of developing a suite of feature-based, content-aware and self-supervised Machine Learning (ML) classification techniques for digital rocks, and to construct a proof-of-concept ML system capable of classifying digital rock samples and macro-scale properties according to pre-defined controlling features.

The successful candidate is responsible for developing algorithms and implementing the system as well as carrying out numerical experiments.

The successful candidate must have a strong background in ML and sound working experiences using popular SVM libraries and object-orientated programming languages like C++/C#. Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. A postgraduate degree, MSc/MPhil/PhD, in either Computer Sciences or Applied Mathematics, or a bi-degree at BSc in Computer Sciences and either of Petroleum Engineering, Hydrology or Material Science is required. Knowledge of geo-statistic methods and fluid flow modelling in porous media will be beneficial.

The post is available for up to 14 months (starting February 2010) in the first instance. The successful candidate may be eligible to register for a further degree as a staff member.

Informal enquiries may be made to Dr. Jingsheng Ma at Jingsheng.Ma@pet.hw.ac.uk.
