Image Analysis Methods for Improving Cancer Treatment

University of Edinburgh

This post is Research Associate in image analysis methods to determine the tumour volume on computerised tomography (CT) images of cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.

The goal of radiotherapy is to deliver as high a dose of radiation as possible to diseased tissue whilst sparing healthy tissue. In curative (radical) radiotherapy planning, delineation of the gross tumour volume (GTV) is based on interpretation of digital image data by a specialist radiation oncologist. The accuracy of the GTV is dependent primarily upon the ability to visualise the tumour, interpret radiological anatomy and understand the potential areas of tumour involvement based on tumour biology. Interpretation of these variables is complex and subjective, resulting in inter- and intra-clinician variability in GTV definition. This research will investigate the use of image analysis for automatically outlining the GTV and providing information on soft tissue on CT image data. This has the potential to reduce variability in GTV definition in comparison to current clinical practice.

You will have a PhD (or have submitted) or equivalent in engineering, physics, computer science or a related discipline, and have a proven background in medical imaging.

Fixed Term: 12 months (starting on 1st January 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter).
