The University of Stirling has recently been awarded a project by the European Commission, (“HUNT: hunting for sustainability”, funded under FP7) along with a team of other international research institutes, to study the role of hunting as a land use in promoting biodiversity conservation and in generating economic values. The project will investigate this issue in Scotland, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Croatia, Slovenia, Tanzania and Ethiopia. The project website is http://fp7hunt.net/
The Research Fellow will work alongside Professor Nick Hanley and Dr Mirko Moro within the Environmental Economics Research Group. The work will involve designing and undertaking studies on the value of ecosystem services related to managing land for hunting, and quantifying the local economic benefits of hunting. Candidates should have, or be about to be awarded, a Masters or PhD qualification in a relevant field, such as environmental economics, conservation science or environmental management.
We require a candidate who can work with other partners on the project in co-ordinating research tasks; attend project meetings; help design, implement and analyse economic valuation studies in the context of hunting, and undertake analysis of the local economic importance of hunting. Specific skills we are looking for include: (i) experience and/or knowledge of environmental valuation techniques (ii) previous research experience in inter-disciplinary projects (iii) awareness of current issues in land management for hunting in the case study countries.
The post is based at the University of Stirling for 12 months. A start date of October 1st 2010 is envisaged. The salary will be on Grade 7 scale £29,853-£35,646 p.a with placement according to qualifications, experience and current salary.
