Research Project for Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Studentship

Study Of Parameters Affecting The Performance Of Solar Photovoltaic Systems Of Various Designs Operating In The Field

University of Reading – Collaborative Partnership Between the University of Reading and Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE)

Vacancy Reference No: P02-2010

SSE (http://www.scottish-southern.co.uk/SSEInternet/) has been investing heavily in Solar PV systems to offset part of their energy consumption of many of their office, warehouse and data centre buildings.  As part of ongoing research programs there is a need to carry out scientific monitoring of Solar PV solutions looking into the crucial factors affecting the performance and metering tariffs of such systems. The monitoring results are expected to provide valuable information to help shape future Solar PV projects this includes taking on board current emerging legislation and policy. Research output from the project is also expected to help potential SSE customers in determining and selecting appropriate solar systems for their particular operational need in the future.

As a research Engineer you will investigate how Solar PV solutions can be adapted in the operational field to reduce future energy demands within the built environment. The successful candidate will investigate the monitoring of leading edge Solar PV systems up to 40kW and at the same time will develop rationale for improving energy efficiency within modern buildings of the future.

Research and study will be conducted within the University, at SSE and their client’s premises. This studentship may require significant travel on a local or national basis.  Applicants will be highly motivated, broad minded, innovative thinkers, with a willingness to work in a cross-disciplinary team of highly qualified, dedicated scientists and engineers. Good written and oral communication skills and an outgoing personality are essential.
