Applications are invited for two full time studentships to commence study September/October 2010.The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) has recently been awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. The Prizes are a national honour recognising exceptional achievement and the Institute is receiving the award for
“sustained excellence – 40 years’ impact in transport research and teaching”.
This is an exciting opportunity to undertake doctoral study at the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS), one of the world’s most esteemed centres for multi-disciplinary research. The successful applicant will join an internationally-leading team undertaking both pure and applied research at the interface of transport towards developing a transport system for the future. Our aim is to develop people with enquiring minds to become instrumental in the future of Transport.
In recognition of its commitment to leading edge inter-disciplinary research, the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) has been awarded five quota allocation ESRC studentships, with two remaining for 2010/11.
While the Masters training recognition is in the areas of and , for PhD research this encompasses a wide range of approaches and methods, incorporating most application areas of transport analysis, as well as being attractive to those from the full range of disciplines supported by ESRC, including social science, economics and psychology.

Standard ESRC rules apply: The scholarships cover fees plus maintenance for UK students (or EU students who have studied in the UK for a sufficiently long period), fees-only for EU students. Detailed eligibility criteria can be found on the .
The minimum academic requirement for entry to PhD with an ESRC +3 scholarship is a Masters Degree with a research training element. For entry to Masters+PhD (1+3 training), a First Class or good Second Class Honours Degree is required. Proficiency in English language is also required (IELTS 6.0 or equivalent).
Assessment of applications is based on academic merit and in competition with other applicants. ITS welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
