PhD Studentship in Factors Influencing Engagement and Ongoing Participation in VR-Mediated Exercise

Centre for Cultural and Industrial Technologies Research

This studentship is located in the Centre for Cultural and Industrial Technologies Research, part of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries. Research in CiTech falls mainly into two strands: the application of advanced computer-based technologies in a wide range of domains (healthcare, defence & security, education, entertainment, knowledge management, science etc.); and research into the creative technologies themselves, and their impact on society.

There is a rapidly growing interest in physically demanding games, with interfaces designed to facilitate exercise in the traditionally sedentary gaming community. We are looking for a candidate who will investigate the use of games technology in VR environments to motivate users in order to encourage exercise.  The research will also have application in health promotion and rehabilitation.

Application Deadline: 20 November 2009, Start date 1 February 2010. The studentship offers £13,290 plus fees for a maximum of three years. UK/EU residence eligibility conditions apply.

Applicants will have a good first degree (minimum 2.1 or equivalent) and ideally a Masters (or equivalent) in a creative technologies or science related subject with a significant computing component.  VR development experience and programming are desirable but not essential. Applications should include:

  • contact details for TWO referees able to comment on your academic performance
  • a statement of 1,000 (words) outlining your proposed project, identifying the objectives of the research and discussing how the work will build on or challenge existing research in the field.
